MY MODEL BODY
Ioana Urma
mirror-FIGMENT-san-diego-1.jpg
Halfway between Frida Kahlo and the Virgin Mary stands the portrait of today’s model woman: an anorexically thin object of desire. This installation is born out of a serious concern with the publicized woman’s body that falls nowhere close to average or, for the majority of the population, healthy. It is the cause for both psychological and physical problems amongst women. The installation offers people a means by which to (humorously) compare themselves to these idealized proportions: face to to face in the imaginary impression of a mirror, or at real physical scale.

CALEIDOSCOPIC
Steve ‘Stove’ Riggs
57caliedoscope-medium.jpg
This is a user-controlled ultra-dimensional portal. When you look into it, you can see the miracle for yourself. Caleidoscopic is a giant fully functioning kaleidoscope. Participants look into the viewing portal, operate the control handles, and see the continuously evolving kaleidoscopic image. People see it, understand what it is, experiment with how to use it, learn what it does, practice doing different manipulations of the controls, and experience it.

You could be suggested to “Walk that way 25 steps, smile all the way” or “This way requires dancing” or to “Find someone wearing purple”. Encouraging people that may be lost to find a purpose, or to try a new direction. Look for many sign posts all over the park at FIGMENT!

JAMBOX
Mark Poole & Enrique Lugo – High Tech High Chula Vista
Plato once wrote, “Music is the movement of sound to reach the soul for the education of its virtue.” Through music we express who we are. It is an almost universal experience that connects us all. To explore how music can bring us all together, we will be designing and constructing a MIDI controlled jambox. A jambox is a social music creation device with which people of all musical abilities can come together, manipulate sound, and create music together. We will be exploring sound, music, electricity, and circuits through creating our jambox. We will then encourage others to express themselves together by interacting with our jambox. The final product will be both interactive and visually appealing.

FIGMENT SKY
Alfimedo Martinez & Shireen Khavandergaran
Three closet doors hooked together on display stands, with a plastic runner underneath. A crate or two with some paint and markers on a table next to the wall on display for FIGMENT guests and participants to come up and write messages, names, and/or words of positivity all over the surfaces. The artist will then mask off certain areas and create a piece of art using the names and words as part of the backdrop. To be enjoyed by all.

BICYCLE POWERED SPIN ART
Jason Acton
This project will be a spin art wheel that will be powered by YOU. One person will drip paint on a piece of paper attached to a wheel. While another person sits on a bicycle to pedal the chains attached to a wheel below spinning the machine. Making the wheel rotate by the pedaling causes the colors of paint dripped on the paper to splatter and create designs.

This system facilitates efficient transportation for city residents, eliminating the need for automobiles.

TWITTER CINEMA REMIX
Christina Ree & Angela Eunsong Kim
Inspired by ice cream trucks that become hair salons and the rowdy origins of early film spectatorship, Drive-By Cinema is an experimental mobile cinema truck that not only pops up projecting free movies throughout San Diego, but also happens to sling ramen, popcorn and silent soundtracks. Part art experiment, part community engagement, part creative hijinks, DBC’s goal is to explore what happens when cinema suddenly becomes a part of the neighborhood, literally.

The Body Art Bus will also become a mobile gallery for the public to experience inside art outside. The bus itself has over 100 hrs of airbrushing.

CRANE WONDERLAND
Cynthia Acosta
The artist made 1,001 Origami Cranes for her Special Ed Class. She started making them with the help of some coworkers mid-April, 2012 and finished in September. As she folded them and hung them up in her room she kept thinking how amazing it would look displayed outdoors. What she will do is hang them in some sort of design so you can look up at them just as the kids did in the classroom, but instead of seeing cranes and ceiling they would see the sky and cranes! She would love for people to write what is art to them and she will show them how to make a crane and then hang it with the others.

SOMETHING FOR THE CREW TO READ ON THEIR JOURNEY
Scott Gengelbach
“Something for the Crew to Read on their Journey” is an ongoing art series about the exploration of outer space in search of God. The whole point of the series is that we will probably never know if God exists so everyone needs to respect other peoples’ views on the subject. The installation will include a rocketship and a control tower (1/32 scale) about ten feet apart with transmission lines connecting them. Visitors will be invited to write their thoughts on God on 4 x 6 pieces of paper w/carbon copies. The original will be put into the cargo hold of the ship and the copy will be hung on the transmission lines for viewers to read.
